This Pūrakau is the origin story for Whakairo that the Ngāti Porou of the Tairawhiti cling to as their whakapapa. This story goes back to Tangaroa. I moe a Tangaroa, Tangaroa married Heketangawainui and this was when the atua was in their attempts to find the human factor in their x factor. Ka moe kia Heketangawainui, e toru ngā tamariki. They had three children. Ikatere, koirā te mea matāmua, ka tō mai ko ngā ika me era ahuatanga katoa te moana. Ikatere was born with all the sea creatures. Tuarua (second child) Ponga; all the descendents of Ponga are amphibious creatures, they can breathe oxygen in the water and out of the water. The last child was Poutu. Poutu was the human and obviously of course humans cannot breathe oxygen in any water. Born from Poutu came Ruatepupuke. Ruatepupuke had a son called Manuruhi.
